Pecan Tree Care in Jonesboro & Northeast Arkansas

This is pecan country. From backyard shade trees to working groves along the ridge and out on the delta, Northeast Arkansas pecans feed families, fill barns, and shade farmhouses. They also happen to be some of the tallest, heaviest, most storm-exposed trees in the state — and they need specialists, not just chainsaws.

Why Pecans Are Their Own Specialty

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is a massive, fast-growing hardwood that regularly tops 100 feet in mature Arkansas groves. Its wood is strong but its growth habit creates unique issues: enormous spreading crowns that sail in delta winds, heavy nut loads that bend and crack limbs every October, a strong tendency toward hollow trunks in old trees, and a susceptibility to limb loss in ice storms. A mature pecan can drop a limb that weighs more than a car — we've cut fallen pecan limbs off barns across Craighead County that took out roof sections.

Pecans Carry Real Value

They're also worth real money. A producing grove tree can yield 50–100+ pounds of nuts in a good year, and homestead trees carry generations of family history. Rough, improper pruning — flush cuts, stub cuts, topping — can set a pecan back a decade. This is not the tree to hand to a general "mow-and-blow" crew.

Timing Pecan Work in Northeast Arkansas

Dormant-season pruning — late winter, before bud break — is the standard for structural work and storm prep. Harvest-time limb repair happens as needed.

The Summer Pruning Caution

One caution we repeat often: avoid heavy summer pruning; pecans push vigorous regrowth that creates weak, whippy growth by fall. And always prune well away from harvest if you want full nut production that year, since heavy cutting redirects energy.

🥧 A note from our crew: if a storm drops a sound pecan limb, that wood is gold — it seasons into some of the finest BBQ and smoking wood in America. Tell us you want it saved and we'll cut it to length and stack it for you.
